Cultivation Notes: The tall distinctive flowers of the Red Hot Poker are unmistakable. Either love them or hate them they are back in fashion and we have fallen head over heels for them. A tough all rounder they are dry tolerant, easy to grow and produce more flowers if left alone than over cared for. What else could you ask for? The only downfall is they will require a tidy up in autumn, a small price to pay for such a carefree show. Plant in drifts or large clumps for best effect. We have some lovely small growing varieties in varying colours to suit all gardens.
Aspect & Hardiness: Prefers a open sunny position and are frost and cold hardy. Soil: Kniphofias will tolerate less than perfect conditions, though thrive well in a cared for garden. The soil should be at a minimum well drained. Propagation: We propagate our kniphofias through division. Once planted in the garden it is best to leave them for a couple of seasons and then they can be easily dug up and borken apart into smaller clumps. Kniphofias don't like being overally disturbed once planated. Watering: Kniphofias are dry tolerant once established. They will not handle wet locations. Feeding: Moderate feeding is recommended in early spring with an organic slow release fertiliser. Avoid the over use of animal manures around kniphofias. Pruning: Remove old flower heads as they finish. Tidy the old ratty foliage by removing in winter. The flowers last well in a vase, but some the flowers of the bigger varieties are very heavy and will need a large vase to hold them upright. Pest & Disease free. Kniphopfias are pretty care free. Look out for mealy bug down in the centre of the clump. This can be managed by regularly tidying the clump, removing old damaged foliage. Heavy infestations can be treated with Pest Oil or Confidor. Planting Companions: Planted en masse they blend beautifully with Savlias, Pervoskia, Miscanthus and Calamagrostis.
